Alethopteris with Seeds

The oval pods on the left 1/2 of this specimen are called Holcospermum and are seed pods characterized by three (3) prominent longitudinal ribs. By association, they are likely from the seed fern Alethoptheris.

 

Location: Nicholas County, West Virginia; Ramp Run Surface Mine #1, located about 12 miles north of Summersville, West Virginia. Turn west off route 19 north of Summersville on Spruce Run Road .
